They played the "Chicken Dance" all the time and the children loved it. Only it is not really the chicken dance. The original song was written by a German, by the name of Werner Thomas, living in Switzerland in the 1950's. He wrote it for his children watching their ducks on the pond. It was called the Ententanz, which means duck dance in English. The song became very famous and a favorite at the Oktoberfests for young and old alike. The lyrics are cute too. In 1981 a band from Germany, called the Heilbronn Band, was hired for the Tulsa Oktoberfest to play. They forgot their duck costume in Germany, so they frantically searched for one in Tulsa. All they were able to get was a chicken costume, donated by a local radio station, and afterwards everyone called it the Chicken dance. Only that the movement is the one of a duck. Go figure! Now ask a German about the chicken dance and they will draw a blank face. You start to hum the song and they say yes it's the duck dance.
