Hello everyone!
So my husband and I finally purchased our dream house in April with five acres in Nanaimo, Bc (Vancouver Island). Our first step to getting back to country life was to purchase 23 hybrid laying hens
most are about 18 months and 5 are about 1 year old.
A few weeks ago a small farm nearby was wanting someone to take their 7 remaining girls as their dog had killed the rest of the flock. So we are now up to thirty.
The breeds and ages of the new ladies are unknow but our best guess 2 older rhode island x, 3 6 month (ish) rhode Island x, 1 that could be a copper maran (black with a copper neck) and one that looks like a barred rock.
Everyone have been in the same run for about a week now and have worked out their differences. The strange thing is tht before we added these guys we were getting 12-15 eggs a day and are now getting about 10.
Wondering if they just need to settle down before they will pick back up or if there is another issue. I'm really hoping that we didn't just acquire 7 little egg eaters as I have seen the barred rock looking one go after an egg and she seems to spend an awful lot of time looking inthe nest boxes.
Any wisdom or ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you
