These boards have been a lifesaver the last couple weeks - since I picked up my new chicks, and had a lot of questions - so I thought I'd finally introduce myself!

I am returning to chicken ownership after a couple decades hiatus. I had cochins in high school but haven't had the time/space to "return to the brood" until now. We recently moved and I inherited a lovely hen with the property who is at least four years old and a solid layer. As she recently lost her partner-hen I wanted to build a new flock, so I got some chicks from a local feed store.

This is actually my first time with little chicks! I acquired some precious beauties: a Buff Orp, a Light Brahma, and two Black Ameraucanas that I am pretty sure aren't black and maybe not true Ameraucanas, but they're sweet little things so whatever they are I'm sure they'll be great. :)

I have some plans to improve the already nice coop set up in place to increase the height of the coop so someone over 3'6" could stand upright in the outdoor coop area (!!), and give the ladies some interesting roosts to use. It's a decent set-up that allows the girls to free range on the property during the day, but they'll be put away at night. The previous owner assured me he'd had only a couple issues over many, many years from local predators, etc.. I'm willing to accept a little risk for a much richer quality of daily life for the ladies, and I'm hopefully the new additions will thrive as good as Lorraine, our inherited hen, has.

Wish me luck! I'm sure I'll have LOTS of questions once they feather up and I start transitioning them out to the coop/yard and introducing them to the current resident hen.

Welcome!!! So glad you are here!!
Haha, I had to laugh at your "coop height" comment because I "crawled around" in one of my chicken tractors today to try to catch one of my cockerels. Even just an extra 6 inches would have been better...!
I hope you find all the information you need to have a really successful time raising your new chicks!
:welcome

Welcome to Backyard Chickens and good luck! ;) Most Easter Eggers are sold as ameraucanas in local feed stores so its probably an EE. Glad to hear you're startin' your own flock again. I absolutely adore chickens and love raising them. Hope everything goes well and you'll have a nice flock of 6 beautiful birds.

PS: Watch out for chicken math!

I almost "accidentally" picked up another chick at the feed store today. (Why are laced Wyandottes so pretty??)

Chicken math. The struggle is real.
I can relate... Just went to Tractor supply JUST to get some feed... Came back with feed of course but also a box full of chicks... Barred rocks, Rainbow Rocks, And some Isa brown.. How could i just walk away and not buy chicks?
