My husband, son and I are learning all over again. We purchased 33 two to three week old meat birds this spring. We ended up with 29 in the freezer. They look like small turkeys.

We also purchased day old chicks, mostly barred rocks, a silver and golden laced Wyandotte, welsummers, americaunas, New Hampshire reds and a mystery rooster. They are enjoying their summer screen tent which we move to new grass every 2-3 days.

We also have 18 layers and a rooster that are older and in their own yard and coop.

I have questions which I will ask about in the various forums.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Congrats on your birds! Sounds like you have quite the flock going there! Chickens are amazing how they can be used for so many things. I'm glad you are enjoying lots of their different uses. Good luck with them all. Feel free to ask any questions.

Have to ask, how does the grass hold up having them in one spot like that for a few days. I've been contemplating this type of thing for a while.

The screen tent works well and is easy to move. It is vulnerable to strong winds though and must be staked down very well after moving. There was no damage to the grass as long as we moved the tent frequently. It was attached to a wooden chicken tractor, where they roosted at night, so other than the first couple weeks, when they didn't know about roosting yet, we did not have any predator problems. We learned that we did need to cover the chickenwire sides at night, due to a raccoon killing one and pulling the wing off another through the wire.
