Back to raising chickens after 20 years

We've retired and moved to Fallbrook, California -- a mecca for backyard chickens. So last month we got one young rooster (RIR/Ameraucana mix) and eight hens -- two Ameraucanas, two Wyandotes, one RIR, and three mixes. Coyotes and hawks are always looming and lurking and menacing here. The rooster (Big Bad John) watches for hawks, very well so far, and our guys are in the well fenced former veggie garden which keeps out coyotes. The only problem so far is Jane Doe, a black mix or possibly sex link, who wants to see the world and keeps escaping the garden and going walkabout.

I'm awfully glad to find this forum. It's answered almost as many questions as it's raised!

Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
