My name is Scott, and I haven't had chickens for almost 20 years. My Father was Puerto Rican so from the time I was in high school and we finally bought a house, he raised chickens, including roosters. I used to live in CA, so some of the extreme weather most face in the US wasn't a concern to us, and when I raised chickens in Northern CA it was comparably easier. 20+ years ago I moved to Maine, and experienced raising chickens through the winter and it was NO picnic, and made lots of mistakes and lost quite a few due to cannabalism and exposure, which broke my heart and infused me with serious pangs of guilt and regret. I now live in Missouri, and while our winters aren't as long or quite as extreme as Maine, things can still get pretty cold and miserable here, and I'm determined not to have the same experience here. I wish a forum like this was available back then!!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I am starting with 9 hens. I live in the burbs, and the code is actually 6, but I'm doing 9 because I'm a rebel.
I am also not getting any roosters to keep a lower profile, but my neighbors all have gardens and other animals around here. I'm in the burbs, but it's more of a country-style burb in small town America than some gentrified HOA area.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I got Silver and Black Wyandotte and Barred Rock
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love the eggs of course, and they're just fun to watch and have around.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I am a Chef by trade, so I do cooking and of course gardening goes along with that. But I also make music (rock music), and have a recording studio, and I also build guitars and do electronics projects.
Looking forward to getting to know some of you!
