Back Yard Chickens In Independance Township, MI

I called the city to ask about the rules for having Chickens and was told that you have to have 3 Acres for one chicken and then .1 for every chicken after that. I have 2.2 Acres and was looking to have like 2 or 3 chickens. I was wondering if there was anyone on here that could help?

3 acres? That's crazy. What a way to keep ya from having them. I'd go into your township ordinances and read them yourself. You may find better answers that way.

There are actually two sets of laws that impact whether you can keep chickens in Michigan; local ordinances, and the Michigan Right to Farm Act, which protects folks who keep chickens and are commercial in nature - for example by selling eggs to friends and neighbors.
