Backyard Brahmas!!

Took my brahmas out today since it was nice and sunny. (and a speckled sussex and a swedish flower). 12 light brahma and 1 gold laced. Hoping i can 3-4 get some half decent lights from them, type wise, not concerned about color.

And some older ones that got to go out for the second time, some buffs and one buff laced, they had a bad case of mites that I treated them for 2 weeks ago so their feathers are still funny.

So glad the weather is getting better

sunshine 0235: what did you use for the mites? Thanks.

Gardstar Garden Poultry Dust. The fineness of it gets in the mites exoskeleton and kills them. After i dusted them with it, you could see the mites jumping off trying to escape, but I havent seen any since them, I check every couple of days now, but I think im in the clear.

I have a question, I have no experience with the pea comb and am wondering about the whole "3 rows vs 1 row" when does this difference in roos and hens start to show up and is it really discernable by how old? I thought I maybe got a roo of the 2 Brahmas I picked up but they are now going on 5 weeks and their little non existent combs look exactly alike, and they look exactly like the 2 Easter Eggers I brought home at the same time. I am starting to think the late feathering was just that and maybe I really do have 4 hens but would love to know when that comb difference starts to show up.

Question for the brahma experts .

I picked up my 2 brahma chicks ( and other breeds ) last thursday . My dark brahma has almost no wing feathers compared to all the other chicks . After reading so much info on here I am starting to worry that it may be a roo ( though it is probably too early to tell) since everyone say that a roo feathers more slowly.

So my question is is there any very early signs , like in the first week that it may be a roo? The farm store will not get any more dark in and I would have to go back for another before they are all out . I really want a dark one but at the same time do not want to go and get another chick if I am just freaking out over nothing . And of course my husband would not be thrilled to add one more .

A week is a little too early to tell. One way to tell on dark brahmas is if the bottom wing feather (as the primaries come in) is black instead of barred. Usually that is at about 2 weeks though.

My dark pullets had black wing feathers when they started to come in BUT there was some light barring in them as well. I am really enjoying watching mine grow.
These are my first Brahmas and so far they are super easy to handle compared to everyone else. The Buff Brahma is the easiest going chick I have ever seen.

I feel super lucky to have them.
