My 6 week Brahma .

I have a question for you all. My 9 week Brahma rooster is big, I haven't weighed him but he is much bigger than the other 3 chicks the same age. I have noticed for the past couple days he wants to crouch down and lay on his stomach a lot. He has huge adequately sized legs I think at least he looks very proportionate. He seems healthy, he walks around and forages with the others and makes his way away from me with as much speed as the other Brahma (they are both less bothered by me than the EE's) He does not seem to limp or anything. Is this normal that he seems to want to hunker down whenever he has to stand in place for more than a couple minutes? I am worried that maybe I should be limiting his food or something. I will weigh him tonight and maybe someone can tell me if he is a scary weight or something lol. He is probably about 6 oz bigger than the biggest EE and she is always up and going.

If you are comparing him to EEs, he will be much bigger. Much, much bigger. Most of mine (males) at about 10 weeks are the size or bigger of most "normal" hens....i.e. RIRs, Barred Rocks. Some are even the size of a game cock or some of the smaller breed males. So, I wouldn't worry too much about it unless there are some other signs of a problem.

Anyway, mine also lay down quite a bit. As youngsters, they still tire easily and like to lay down in the dirt for a quick nap whenever they get the chance. Mine will stop doing this at about 16 weeks, seems like one day they wake up and don't need those little naps anymore. Most of the time, they don't go to sleep, just rest for a few minutes (or a half an hour).

Oh good that makes me feel much better. Having never had them I was thinking it may be a problem. Actually he and one of my EE's are almost as big as my Production Reds already. The EE's are supposed to be "smallish" but she is not far behind him. The little girl Brahma is the smallest of the 4, it is very confusing. She though was a very light eater till I just a few days ago switched to grower crumbles. I think she just hated the chick "mash" feed stuff. She has been stuffing herself since I changed over. She was just skin and bones and has already put some meat on in the last couple days.

Yes some feathers on the legs
I wonder what they could be? My friend in Tyaskin has the same issue with hers. I think she purchased it as a Wyandotte it began to look like a Sussex with feathered legs. Now it looks like a Light Sussex×Light Brahma. Her little girl has the perfect Columbian pattern and on the small side.

Look like a buff x light cross but the single comb is definitely not Brahma. They also aren't fluffy enough for cochin influence

thanks, great education session here, seems like a cross now..

I have to show off! Some of you know the "Saga of the UnBrahmas" so I thought I'd share a picture or two or three of my Tinys. They've been brooded as my other chicks were, outside in the run under a heating pad cave, and they are absolutely thriving! Today we started integration, and it went better than I thought it would. I had more trouble with the older chicks picking on them than I had with the Bigs, but I kinda expected that.

Here they are figuring out the opening to the brooder. It's big enough for them to get in, but the older chicks and the Bigs can't follow.

Three of them ventured outside to the yard. That's Agatha on the far right, one of the Bigs. Just behind the Tinys is one of the Littles, the older chicks. As you can see, peace was in the air.

Some are exploring the run, some are still stuck in the brooder trying to figure out how to get out there too. That big half log in the run has been wonderful I have the other half in the coop. The Tinys and the Littles can run under the logs if they get spooked, but the Bigs can't fit under there.

I'm so delighted to have my long awaited Buff Brahmas. Nip and tuck there for a bit, but they are here now and I'm happy!

You are getting more peace than mine it seems. If I just had my Buff Orps to worry about all would be fine but my Production Reds have it out for the littles.
