Backyard Brahmas!!

I agree on the Purina, but unfortunately, it is the only choice here besides Dumar, which I really don't like at all, until they are old enough to go on the Nutrena. For some reason, our TSC only carries the Nutrena for adult birds, not for the youngsters.

Mine come to the bag of meal worms shaking....but meal worms can be pricey so I am very, very careful with how much I feed. Good idea on putting some scratch in the shavings...I'll have to try that, maybe instead use some sunflower seeds since it is so hot here? I've avoided feeding inside the coop because of the mouse problems that I've had, but maybe if I got the girls scratching through it they would also keep the mice away.

Has anyone noticed that the boys are not as inclined to treats as the girls are? My boys will eat the sunflower seeds and the meal worms, but really don't like the other treats like kitchen scraps.

I would feed little to no sunflower seeds in the summer. They r very oily and heat the birds up and give lots of energy but that ends up turning into heat. My male birds of any breed eat a few things and leave the rest for the ladies.

So everyone agrees that Nutrena is better than Purina? Dumar is made by Purina. I'd really rather not feed Purina to anything, but there are so few choices.

There are so many feed choices, depending on where you live. Just read the ingredients. My birds can tell the difference. They eat the Purina, but don't necessarily love it. They LOVE the Nutrena. Where you live there may be some additional choices, especially if there is a feed mill nearby.

Mine are eating Nutrena All Flock. I tried the other brands available but found them lacking and the birds not looking as good.
This winter I may try and special order some game bird feed. Cannot seem to find it as a regular stock item.

If you ferment whatever you feed, you'll improve it

I live in a small town and can only get Purina, Nutrena, and Dumar. I'm going to try to find a feed mill. :)

Nutrena here, our Cal Ranch gets the grower pellets with 18% protein. Will change to All Flock or something like that in another month.

The feed I have access to is made by Cargill, and unbelievably works out about $38 per #50 - that's what so many people here just feed corn and free range.
