i have 2 dark brahma chicks, when looking at adding birds after loosing some of my older hens, the light brahmas i have had had no illness' and no issue with heat or cold, so thats why i chose them over cochins, my other big love- but my large fowl cochins couldn't deal with the heat last year and lost the few i had-

so these are my brahmas- Lilly and Emmy



and the new kids- any clue as to boys and girls? Other than boys are slow feathering?

Interesting the regional differences in feed and what stores carry them.  I see even Walmart  carries poultry/stock feed in parts of the country.  Around here (southwest Ohio) small country feed mills have been going under and are few and far between. We still have TSC stores, but they are very proud of their feed, or at least appear to be by the prices they ask. Which was about the only thing around until the Rural Kings stated opening a couple years ago.

Our TSC has crazy prices on nearly everything. Their medicated chick starter makes my chicks poop stink very very bad. I think its the Dumor brand in the yellow bag.

I have heard others say they noticed that with Dumor feed in general. I doubt the amprolum is the cause, if that is the coccidiostat they use..

Big Medicine, thank you for replying. I worry some about the outside run feeder . it is well under the coop eve and most wild birds can't get in my run. I really like 1x2 welded wire, I should buy stock in it. Once in awhile a tiny sparrow gets in and my Brahmas usually case them off.

I feed outside just to keep the mice out of the feed. I also didn't really design my coops for feeding inside. I don't usually have any trouble with wild birds, although right now I'm having a serious problem with a wild turkey....I've never seen one down here before, can't imagine where she came from. As a disclaimer, we aren't in any waterfowl flyways so AI and other nasties that come from the waterfowl aren't a problem for us. I think if I lived in a flyway, I'd have to feed inside.

The bigger issue that I have with outside feeding/watering is because of the heat I have waterers everywhere....the wild birds do come to the water, generally not in the runs but they use the water that I keep out for when the flock is free ranging. It's a problem that I haven't figured out how to resolve except to keep the chickens in the runs. Most of the birds that come to the waterers are dove, which bring in the hawks.

I like the FRM brand medicated starter/grower. It also uses amprolium as the coccidiostat. Imnot sure what is in the Dumor that gives off that smell...but it is awful. Not to say that chick poop should smell nice but the dumor makes it nearly impossible to brood chicks indoors imho

Great news for me, that little feed mill I found near by has starter/grower for $12.55 for a 50 pound bag!! I think I'll give it a try. Thank you everyone for all the feed advice and input!!

Hi! May I ask where you live? I also live in FL & am looking for a mill. The feed prices here are RIDICULOUS. I just moved back to FL from GA & I was buying a 22% layer pellet from Tucker Milling for $11/ 50lb bag! Man, I miss that feed & the price. We have NO feed stores close. TSC is almost an hour away & their prices are crazy. I would like a better feed than Dumor but I can't spend a ton of $$ either. Any info wold be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I live in Zephyrhills. It's Pasco county. I haven't found the price to be the problem, I only have 3 chickens. I just want to feed them really good food. That's what sent me searching for a mill.

Thanks for the response. I'm in Flagler county, between Daytona & St Augustine. I'm hoping to find one close. I love getting my own mix. I have about 50 chickens, so price is a little bit of concern to me & most are Brahma, so they can EAT! lol Thanks again. I'll just keep searching.
