There has been a shortage going on a year already...if not longer.

There is a local lady who raises quail, I am not sure our market could handle 2 so close together.

Is the shortage of NPIP certified farms or of people processing the applications?

In Texas NPIP just means your flock has been tested for a disease that pretty much doesn't exist anymore. To me...the title means absolutely nothing. It does not mean that one has a healthy flock.

Thank you! This is kind of what I was thinking. Higher end/uncommon birds, rotate breeds every few seasons or so (to avoid oversaturation)
I am looking at it for a part time income as well, to help me be able to stay home with my kids. (we started homeschooling this year)
Also to help off set the costs of some of the homestead infrastructure.

I live in northern California and have been selling my eggs for a couple of years now. I try and try and cannot turn a profit. It just seems like something always comes up to spend the profit on! We needed to upgrade to electric fence to protect the flock from the bears, then I had to renew my egg handler's license ($50 a year), then we needed to re-enforce the bottom of the free range area to keep the new chicks safe (7 rolls of 2x50' chicken wire). You get it. It's always something. I sell plenty of eggs! I don't even have enough to attend the Tractor Supply Farmer's Market next Saturday, so I do well with the egg sales. Profit??? No. I have 29 layers, one rooster and 16 chicks right now. I wouldn't change a thing, however, I probably break even most of the time and I wouldn't change this life for anything! Go with your heart and you will always be where you should be! We are "Peppercorn Acres".

Yeah, I don't use it as a marker of health. It means pretty much nothing to me in terms of how I handle incoming birds, I would never assume a tested flock didn't potentially have other issues going on.

That said, I am excited to be able to ship eggs, and the relatively minor cost and hassle is worth it to me in terms of doing it without having to look over my shoulder while I do it. If they ever get their act together for testing again....
