Bad duckling purchasers thread

oh by the way my friend was selling her car on craigslist and when she clicked an email from someone it was a virus and put over 200 viruses on her computer and shut the whole thing down-they are aware of this at craigslist and are trying to fix the problem

I have for many years bred and showed my dogs and have a strict policy when selling or placing them. I will have the same policy in place for chicken and duck buyers if I ever sell any. One reason I dont go to the local swaps anymore is the total disregard to just basic humane treatment a number of the sellers and buyers have for the animals they buy or sell.

Yeah, that's really common. I click questionable links all the time and my computer just warns me "this site my harm your computer' sounds like your friend doesn't have any antivirus. Tell him to invest in one if he likes his computers to last for more than 6 months lol.

As far as the OP's creepy guy, Just email back "send me this info....etc" if he emails back, tell him "send me this info" and etc. Idiots hate it when you waste their time, they will either give up or give you the info. If you have a feeling he's lying about it, just block him.

my story: Some kid emails me wanting free "reject" ducks (he used that word) Like what, why would I put a special needs duck up for sale anyway? and like I would let it go to a minor with no money for vet bills (let alone let him have a duck at all)

Those are great stories!!! Thanks for sharing. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this guy is a creep at best. I have written to him once, a while back, and he didn't answer my questions--just sent me more of his own, and rudely phrased--so he's now just on my blacklist and gets filtered straight to my archives. I don't want to delete the emails altogether in case he's more than a creep and I ever have to deal with him in some way--I'll want records.

Wow, on the ducks in the trunk. And the "reject" ducks--that's kind of funny. Actually, I can imagine where that one might not have been too bad--maybe he's a do-gooder and read somewhere about some kids rescuing "reject" animals and thought he'd do a good turn in kind. And just doesn't communicate well--or maybe he's eight and a little ahead of his time and doesn't realize he's being rude. Still, I think you were right not to adopt to him!

I do have a policy for buyers, though it's nothing as strict as I would have for dogs or cats. I actually don't mind if they plan to eat them (though I can't imagine someone buying Runners to eat!), as long as they are treated humanely from start to finish. I'm not a vegetarian so I don't have a problem with eating meat and I think raising your own and treating it well is a very humane way to do that.

But I do require that they buy at least two, and I recommend a minimum of three. And when they first contact me, I request basic information about their plans for the ducks when they are adults. Then I play it by ear, and most of the time my feelings about folks turn out about right.

I had a couple come pick up some ducks yesterday and they were so funny. He was from Cuba and told me about how different things were raising animals when he was a kid in Cuba--how spoiled American pets were. But then he was the biggest spoiler ever! I saw him at the feed store yesterday--just coincidence--and he was asking the lady if she had any heat lamp bulbs that didn't emit light (he had seen mine when he picked up his babies), because he thought the ducks might like to sleep in the dark. She didn't have any and I suggested a pet store, but that it would be more expensive than regular bulbs and he laughed and said, "When you're in this deep, you don't even think about cost!" Apparently, each of their five rescued dogs eats a separate expensive diet, plus they have rescued parrots, and their total animal food bill each month: $700!!!! Wow. lol

I feel pretty good about that home. Wish everyone were like that. Well, except I don't really care whether they can afford a $700 a month feed bill, as long as they CARE as much as that guy does.

You just never know with people. Some people (usually men to be honest) are just very short in their communication. I remember one time I got all bent out of shape because I sent a friend of ours a bunch of information and he just replied with "thank you". My husband thought I needed to be committed because this upset me so, LOL. When you ask them to answer questions though point black and they won't, well...I would just move on and not sell to him.

It's tough, you just never know. You can only do your best to place your birds in the best environment possible. Some of it is simply getting a feel for people and taking the leap of faith that they will follow through with appropriate care (of course, asking them questions too). Different people sometimes have different ideas on what constitutes appropriate care though. I don't consider my ducks to be pets, but I do think they need to be treated with respect and care for their safety. One thing that is a big deal to me is having predator proof cages and I have found that when you really press people on what they are using for caging, MOST do not have predator proof cages (even a lot of people here on BYC). Should I not sell to them? Should I not sell to people if they are going to eat them? It all just depends on the birds, the people, and the situation. You can only do your best. For me personally, intuition comes into play a lot when I place birds.

I had a guy put 4 standard size adult ducks in the back seat of his car....

You mean everyone doesn't have a $700. a month feed bill?????

I too have exotic parrots. Have had them for 30 years. Parrot food is expensive.

We have 3 dogs, (had 4 but we just had to put our good old dog down

), 3 cats, 22 parrots, Close to 100 chickens, 50 ducks, 15 geese, 16 guineas.

Parrot food costs almost $300. a month alone.

fattie, in the middle of the night, I was awake and started thinking about this post of yours and burst out laughing. I mean a big old loud belly laugh!! My husband was NOT amused. LOL

Although he was earlier before we went to bed and I read your post to him. He started to embellish the story by saying, "And in the back of the pickup was a little old Chinese lady cutting up celery, onions, carrots, and potatoes adding them to the 50 gallon drum with the ducks in it. AND there was a small campfire under the barrel...."

Well I was laughing so hysterically by that time that when we went to bed shortly afterwards....I couldn't fall asleep because I couldn't stop laughing!!

Some of these posts really need a warning on them!!!! I'm still laughing today over this!
