I'm on Day 10 of my first time incubating. I just candled and have a few questions:

A) Out of 42 eggs, I discarded what I thought to be 11 "clear" eggs. I couldn't see any development or veining. I cracked them all open and two had very small embryos--smaller than a dime. The 2 eggs with embryos appeared clear & didn't have near the dark inner coloring as the others. I know it's hard to say, but do you think these were viable?

B) One batch of eggs had a very bumpy ride thanks to the USPS. I discarded the ones that I knew were broke, but over the past 10 days, a few had small dried yolk bubbles appear on the surface. Almost as if it sweated & dried. Another had a white, calcium-like colony of hard, dry bubbles that appeared. These were discarded and found to not be growing. I've heard often of a "weeping" or "sweating" egg... is this the same thing? When an egg weeps, is the discharge wet or dried?

C) A reputable breeder told me that he never candles his eggs, and as long as you were using fresh eggs, they wouldn't blow up in the incubator. Several of his eggs were clear, so I didn't see the need to hang on to them. Is he correct in his theory?

None of the eggs smelled prior to discarding or after they were opened. I didn't want to risk non-viable eggs becoming a problem later on & to get a better idea of what the hatch numbers might be. Thanks for the information!

Sweating eggs; I had that happen for the first time... I did just roll fridge eggs into the incubator for kicks and giggles and I guess they "leaked". No stinky smell though. Thing to keep in mind is to let them get to room temp first.

As for exploding eggs... I just read someone's week old egg explode. Could be a lot of reason... dirty hands touching them by accident or dirty incubator parts and pieces. I think sometimes it just happens. I've only had it happened, once but I lost the egg in the room LOL found it a month or so later... rolled off when I was culling eggs haPr

Here is my experience.....A "fresh" egg can still rot if it's shell is compromised and bacteria gets in. In the process of incubating(ie heating the egg) to make the embryo grow, you are also incubating the bacteria. It will weep/sweat. Sometimes it's noticeable sometimes not. It will smell. Even before the egg "explodes" you will know you have a bad one because when you open the incubator, you can smell it. Be very very careful removing the rotten eggs. I had one explode in my hand - OMG! it is really hard to get that smell gone!!!

I used to candle alot. I would mess up the hatches opening the incubator all the time. So I tend now to candle at 10 days and at 18 when I take out the turner. If I'm "iffy" about an egg, I leave it in. I hate cracking one open and seeing that I made a mistake! There are alot of sites you can check out showing various pics of good and bad eggs. I'd go search "candle eggs" on line and just do a bit of browsing to familiarize yourself. Basically you have to practice, practice, practice.

I dont touch them either befor days 12 cause mine are all brown and harder to see.

I just candled all of mine several purchased throu mail and 7 of my own. It was day 12 yesterday. Removed out of 17... 8 ,,,,5 of which were mine. Just 3 from the breeder.. cracked all and checked there was no deveolpment of any kind in the eggs, just plain old yolk and egg and no smell. 2 others in the entire group were iffy so left them in as one was dated a day later than the others and one , just wasnt sure. better be couple day safe than sorry
the other eggs are filling up fast now, in one or 2 not seeing the air cells deveoping the way I want thou humid is down to dry hatch, some you can see decent air cells forming a few the chicks are tight right up to the top I thought where you hiding that air cell, maybe its toward the bottom, or side not sure.. not sure how to handel that. Not sure what that means but can only waitsee,, and bottom and side. temps running actually 98 - 100 still air as the forced air quit right off the bat. watching the little slider therms that sit on top of eggs, and a side temp reader that readds from the bottom, anywhere from 90 - 95. instructions said do not allow the surface therms over 101. so that part has gone well. kept the eggs in the middle of the bator

other than checking the 2 iffy ones tommorrow, Im out of there till monday and lockdown.mine are going on thier sides just cause of the few I cant yet tell whats happening with the air cells. Not going to use cartons.
