OK, I've been hatching/incubation for 5 years now successfully and have a question.

I had an order of eggs purchased on BYC shipped to me recently. Upon opening the box it didn't really smell pleasant which surprised me from the start.

I rested them as none were broken, then placed under 3 broody hens.

I know what to look for and am an experienced candler. While doing so at day 6 I noticed a really bad odor from a number of them so really handled them super carefully so as not to break open a rotten egg.

Well truth be known in the end. Out of 18 eggsshipped......8 were rotten eggs on that first candeling. Totally black inside.

Some were clear/scrambled which I understand the PO is awfully good at. And some just never developed. I hatched 2 peeps. It happens..........

I've never had this EVER happen to me in hundreds of eggs shipped to me and am looking for possible answers. How does a fresh egg go to black rotton in 1 weeks time? If that were a common occurance I'd have experienced it many times before. This is a first.

Were the eggs too old when shipped?
Were they being gathered up promptly/fresh and being sent to me? Or did they sit under a hen in a nest box before-hand and had begun to grow?
I don't get it and am looking for opinions on what might possibly could have happened.

I ordered a second set from a different breeder and voila! No rotten stinky eggs and wonderful live at hatch date.

Just saying.................

I had left good feedback because they arrived intact and were shipped promptly.

Now I think additional feedback might be necessary so other folks don't experience the same situation.

Thank you, my thoughts as well.
Considering I got them over 6 weeks ago before the the heat....it really shouldn't have been a factor. So I lean towards old eggs.
