Bad head wound with graphic pics

I am glad she is doing a bit better. Try making her a smoothie, she realy needs the nutrients. Hopefully she will drink it. You can also try massaging her crop to get things flowing again. I hope it resolves itself soon.

Twitch's eyes opened up and are fine. My other roo, Nugget is the one who lost vision in one eye (right eye I think). He adjusted well after a week or two. He had to re-learn how to fly, eat, and even walk straight. Now he is like he was before. He does look around more since he has a blind side.

Hi Taz. She's doing much better thanks! She started pecking at her feed and I decided to stop hand feeding her to encourage her to try harder. She's now eating fine. She still can't aim very well, but who cares, as long as she can eat and drink

This is a pic of the first time she decided to get out of her box. I think she was fed up with craning her neck over the side to see what we were watching on TV!

Then she decided that wasn't good enough and she had to sit with us. This is taken after she flew out of the box and my OH caught her before she crashed into him.

Now, if we're late for our evening JAG session, she grabs the prime viewing spot:

I've put a towel on the back of the sofa now, just in case we don't get to the living room on time. I don't want to close the box on her as it's very dark and not very tall. She being such a good little pet. Yesterday, I took her into the garden with me as we were fixing the coop roof (high winds broke it). She stayed next to us and followed us around.

Her current problem is itchiness. She squeals and scratches both sides of her head. She's brought welts up. As the neosporin has finally arrived, I've cleaned it up a couple of times and put that on it. I don't know what's causing the itchiness.

I tried making her a 'cone', but she didn't like it lol. Any ideas for stopping her from scratching?

Ive had this happen to my brahma hen turns out it was a young curious raccoon but my hens was as severe she lost her right eye and still lives today hope that she gets better

Wow she looks so much better. I am so happy. The itchiness could be because it is healing. Like when we have a cut it itches when healing. I hope she keeps doing great. She sure is beautiful.

Thanks, Poultryboy. I'm glad to know your girl is doing well; it must have been awful dealing with a lost eye. Thankfully, mine didn't lose an eye, she just needs specs!

That's what I thought too, about the itchiness, which is why I didn't pay it any attention in the beginning. She now screams when she's itching, I guess because she scratching too hard?

She is fluffed up just like Twitch was. He stayed that way for quite a while. Moving around and interacting with you is a good sign. Are you still feeding extra her protein?

The itching is probably due to the healing process. I kept a little blanket over my boy to block the scratching. A bit of cornstarch where she is scratching would probably help. You still may want to check for mites/lice just to make sure.

OMG, I have just found one of my chickens like this, with sore just like your chicken, have brought similar spray, but dont have anywhere else to put her while it heals, so the other chickens are pecking at the purple spray, help! what should I do?

Your poor hen..mine is not as bad but close. My roo breeds her obsessively everyday!!! And he is so mean to her..not the other hens just her. I brought mine in the house, washed the blood and seepage with warm water and DAWN dish detergent.(Being very careful around her eyes.) I put neosporin on her but let her back into the flock. Big mistake! Today he was dragging her around by the back of her neck with her screaming! Brought her in the mudroom, recleaned and cut all the gross matted feathers away from her head ,neck, ect.and cleaned gently with warm Dawn again. However, this time I sprinkled Gold Bond Medicated powder thickly on the open wounds. She is in the house in a dog crate with a tempory nesting box. Its quiet, warm, and isolated except for the 2 Labs that insist on lying next to her crate.
I will keep her inside until completely healed. Will this also help with the roo turning his affections to the other available girls? Or will he just keep me Mr. Caveman with this hen when she gets to join the flock? Any advice?? Thanks.

This just happened to one of my roos. I swore he was foing to die. But I cleaned him up and forced him to drink. He didnt eat for 5 days but hes eating and drinking on his own now. Its crazy what they can withstand. Im rooting for her.
