Bad PayPal experience! Anyone else have this happen?

A few weeks ago, I got an e-mail from PayPal - confirming my transaction with some guy- with an Oriental name I wouldn't try to pronounce- that I had purchased an $899 phone from. It was being shipping to a Mr. Jones (how original) in Houston TX.

I immediately filed a dispute, and then, thank God, I thought to call my bank and credit card company. The bank put an alert on my account, and the credit card company cancelled our old card number and gave us a new one.

I say Thank God, because Paypal's policy is to TAKE THE MONEY FROM YOUR ACCOUNT AND HOLD IT UNTIL THEY RESOLVE THE ISSUE.

They did indeed take the money from my checking account electronically, and the bank immediately reversed the transaction. $900 bucks would have made a couple of automatic payments ( like my power and phone!!) bounce!!

I got an e-mail from Paypal telling me my bank had reversed their withdrawal from my account, and they weren't happy about it. TOO BAD!!

It's been a good 3 weeks, and I haven't heard anything about a resolution. In the meantime, my Paypal account is frozen.

If I ever get my Paypal account up and running, you can be sure I'll delete my account information every time I'm done with a transaction and just put it back in when I need to.

Has anyone else had this happen?

No, I've never had it happen, but that's why I don't have my paypal account linked to our main bank account or even the same bank where our main account is. I opened a free account at a separate bank and linked it there. I keep very little in it (just enough to cover whatever I want to buy) and that way there's no risk to the rest of our money.

You were hacked or accidentally clicked on a fake Paypalor Ebay link or something. Did the email you received address you by full name? They don't normally send a 'confirming' email, just a bid won and payment made email, it almost sounds like that right there is what did it. If it doesn't address you by full name, you can count on it being fake. Glad your bank got it stopped. Be sure you go change all of your passwords, too. On everything, not just Ebay and Paypal, if you use the same password for any other account, you need to change them ALL.

Good luck

Oh goodness! That is terrible and I'm glad that you caught it.

I have had like 5 or 6 e-mails stating that things have been purchased (high dollar items, same as you) through my Paypal account before and I just reported the e-mails to the Paypal fraud dept. I haven't had any issues with my bank though. It is scary to think that the transactions could actually go through.

How awful!

So glad your bank came through!
NO,.. this has never happened to me and I have had a Paypal account for years and years,.. but WingingIt 's idea is such a good one I may just do the same thing!

PayPal has screwed me before when someone didn't deliver all the goods I ordered and they wouldn't refund the money for the portion I didn't recieve.

YESSS!

They locked my account recently saying I was a hacker trying to steal money or some ridiculous thing. All right, I'll send you my STATE ID, DRIVERS LICENSE, UTILITY BILL, SOCIAL SECURITY CARD, BANK STATEMENT, and CONFIRM MY PHONE so you can make me able to use your service!

I did it against my better judgement, then they said Oh, sorry, we denied your claim.

Okay? Do I get my money back?

Oh, it will be held for 180 days for no reason!

No more Paypal for me, Google Checkout is the way to go.

Hubby got that last night and PayPal put denial on his account. that's fine because he can use my PayPal. When he signed up last night, it got to the point that PayPal wanted to know is SS, DL numbers, DOB, etc. it got too personal and I told him someone is spamming or PayPal is getting ridiculous.

Everytime I get an email from PayPal, I would check it out directly in my PalPal to make sure it is legit. 95% of the time, it is a spam or scam.

Personally I think Ebay and PayPal needs to get a MOVE on to better security. It's getting too easy for hackers to get into. If they want to approve an account, your bank account and ID verification on both parties would be good When Ebay and your bank works together.

Sorry that happened to you, but that was quick thinking on your part!

Duh -- I didn't realize you could do that. I only use Paypal rarely.
