Hi all,

My 1 year old hen skipped laying eggs for a few days, not uncommon for her. Yesterday she was happy and lively, but did seem to waggle, and we suspected she may be eggbound. We applied a little oil massage near the cloaca and soon we had result: one egg without shell, and one thing that seemed like a membrane. She usually has rock hard shells, so that was quite surprising.

Her health seemed to decline immediately after, and she was very lethargic. We have taken her inside, in a warm room. Yesterday she continued to eat normally, and drink excessively. But kept pushing and pushing, and doing everything she normally does when she lays an egg.
For the first few hours, only clear water came out, but since this morning we have seen more solid & regular droppings. They take her so much effort, all she does is push and push. The cloaca is constantly moving, her tail up and she is getting tired.

I am worried there may be some egg left in her. I cannot feel anything, but she is behaving as if she needs to lay an egg. She could be constipated, I don't know. We will try to go to the vet tomorrow, but how can we help her in the next 24 hours?

She is 1 year, 1.8 kg, temp 41 degree Celcius. We have given her some yoghurt, blueberries, she has water with electrolytes and she has eaten her regular pellets.

She drank a lot of water yesterday? Was her crop empty this morning, what is it like now?
Photo of her and her poop?

You mention she has one egg without a shell - was that intact in a membrane? The other thing, was it just membrane - no yolk or albumen followed?
Does she have a discharge from the vent that looks "eggy"?

You could try soaking her in an epsom salts bath if she's not too lethargic, but sometimes soaking can send them over the edge, if you feel it might, then place her in a steamed up bathroom or you can put a heating pad under her on low. (She needs room to get off the pad if she gets too hot).

I would keep her hydrated - sounds like she's not having a problem drinking?
Quick uptake of Calcium may help with contractions and help her expel any material/egg so if you can, give 1 Tums or 1/2 Caltrate. If you have poultry vitamins on hand like Poultry Cell or Poultry Nutri-Drench, direct dose her at 1cc per 3 pounds of weight.

Hard to know what's going on with her, she may have another soft shelled egg, another membrane to pass, if there was no yolk with the membrane, that may have traveled back up the oviduct and dropped in the abdomen - many scenarios I can think of.
You are doing the best you can.
