If you have a shipment from a hatchery and lose birds within the first couple of days days, should you photograph the dead ones to prove they died or will the hatcheries take your word for it?

Normally the hatcheries give you a couple of days to call them with any losses. They will either offer to refund your money or see if you want replacements. I would call as soon as you lose some and then call back with any other totals. They might have a cut off time, like any lost after 5 days, no refund.

I think some of the larger hatcheries will, the smaller ones may want proof of loss, I think they pretty much go on a case by case basis, they do keep shipment and and complaint records for folks who repeatedly abuse the system.

Then a raven got 12 of my half grown chicks out of the coop yesterday. It found a small space we had missed. It is so discouraging. They were doing great then yesterday it was like a chicken Holocaust and it has not stopped yet.

You should have called after thee first or second loss, especially if others looked sick. The sooner the better. I had no trouble getting credit after losing about half of a shipment.

I called about the first one, and I have emailed about the others. The lady I talked to on the phone told me to call Monday morning with my total losses. They are being very sympathic and said they will refund. But do they refund shipping also or am I going to be out on that? Shipping is a big part of the total cost.

When I say bad shipment I don't mean the hatchery sent inferior chicks, the box was crunched on one side. I think they had a rough shipping experience. The hatchery did everything right. There was two heat packs included. I would/will order from them again.

You should take a picture of them just incase a hatchery asks for one. This usually only happens when you order from a very small hatchery. It is just a good idea to take a picture of them just in case.
