At some point, probably early this morning after the night's storms, something scaled an 8 foot fence, killed one of my Maria Hall Jersey Giant Blue hens, went back over the fence with it and ate it. Most of you know, jerseys are not small birds and although this was not yet a mature hen it probably weighed 5-6lbs. I say a big fat aZZ coon, my stepdad says bobcat. Took it right outside the fence and ate everything except the feathers he said. I haven't seen it yet. Looks like poison and traps are in order. Have no room here for feeding the inhabitants of the neighborhood. Man, I am so angry. Looks like it tried to pick off my light brahma roo first but he may have been too big, he's beat all to heck and stressed out but other than looking like he beat his head against something he is okay. The other 3 jerseys are fine. This is sturdy fencing we are talking about, not chicken wire. It's rectangle wire like 2 x 3" it's smaller than dog fence or hog fencing and 8 feet high set inside of railroad ties with the posts concreted in although we had not put the netting over the top but it wasn't a hawk or owl so whatever it was probably would've chewed or just broke through if it'd been there.

And this is on top of the fact that my due date is in 10 days and show no progress at all on going into labor. As if that doesn't upset me and make me irritable and grumpy enough, I find one of my high quality show birds is killed to feed some dang varmint. I'd be mad if it was a mutt bird. I am just so mad right now. I only had 4 jerseys, one roo, three hens - two lights and two dark blues and the eggs were not cheap or easy to hatch. Ugh.

2 x 3 fencing is big enough to let critters in but mostly you need a good varmint proof top on your pen. I know coons are great climbers but I would think something more athethletic like a bobcat probably did the deed. They will be back. Could you add a string or two of electric fencing to your pen - especially top where a critter might brace himself before jumping down? A game cam would be good to ID the predators but, won't stop them, unless it also fires missiles. Sorry for your loss.

Sorry about delayed labor also. I well remember getting to the finish and saying "take it out already." I had 28 hours of back labor and the doctor on call decided he didn't want to spend anymore time with me so he did a c section. Like a dummy I thought after the stitches are out, I'll feel fine. Not so I never thought about a c- section being major surgery - oooooowww. Best wishes for a speedy labor and delivery and beautiful, healthy baby.

If you have just a few birds lock them in a large crate put some leg traps around the crate of birds you will most likely catch the critter that is what the ODFW state trapper told me to do several years ago. You need to set about half a dozen traps around the crate a few feet out as the critter will circle the crate looking for a way to get them. Remove or spring the traps in the morning.

Yeah, what tops it off is we are/were about one afternoon's worth of work away from finishing their coop that has a heavy metal lid, 3 foot wood walls and then the steel fencing around the tops with a wooden sliding trap door that could open or close that's attached to the garden they are in now to free range during the day. We set the roosts down and in far enough so that coons or possums can't "reach" in a grab anything roosting and of course the roof would keep anything else from getting inside. What a difference a few hours makes apparently....I don't know where to get steel traps but that's a good idea, to use "bait" I could set them inside a dog crate where'd they'd be safe and put the traps around the crate. I'm sure that animal will be back looking for it's next easy meal real soon.

I look forward to seeing what you catch. I would put the chickens in the garage and set up traps in the coop. The havahart traps at home depot are not the best, but should hold up.

Them vermin/varmints are just doing what's natural to them.
Best to build Fort Knox! LOL!
Or train yer dogs to work around the coop.
