Bad storm costs us one chicken. They won't get out of the rain?

We had a horrible storm yesterday and the prospect for more storms throughout the rest of the week. Hail the size of quarters pounded down and the property flooded. The barn, where the chicken coop is, was perfectly dry. It's on an incline and did not flood. The problem is only 1/2 of the stupid chickens went in out of the storm. I was out catching the other 1/2, wading through foot deep water and tossing them into the barn. They were all crowded into the one dry corner left in their run. Why didn't they go in out of the storm when it started? We lost one smaller red sex link. What the heck?

My girls are rain stupid as well.....

They will get soaked and not go in....until I put a solar light in the coop. When it gets dark and stormy the coop is now the lightest place and they go into it. I dont know if this is the cure for the problem but it worked for us. My hydro is not to bad either because it only goes on in the darker times and I unplug it at night.

I suppose I could put a light in the coop. It was oddly light outside though. Pretty bright out but hailing and raining like crazy.

They're not stupid, they panicked. It's not often they see quarter sized hale stones and flash flooding with foot deep water, and either of those must be pretty scary for small animals.

Us humans don't see it often where we are either. We have maybe one bad storm a year and the rest of the time we see 0 moisture. Perpetual drought here. :(

we had pretty big rains here yesterday. the chickens did not get out of the rain. i assumed they would go in the coop when things got too uncomfortable - not. it wasn't hailing, so i let them be. a true case of "not enough sense to come in out of the rain".

I just want to know how you guys are getting rain, because we NEED it so badly here in Missouri. It is so dry. My poor pasture is a mess.
I wish my chickens would have the opportunity to stay in the rain!! Although, you can keep the hail. Wow, crazy weather lately. I am so sorry you lost a chicken.

Trust me it'll be the only moisture we get for the entire summer. Plus it only came with a severe thunderstorm and a tornado that ripped through Wheatland, WY. Youtube it.
