Hello, we had some severe thunderstorm run through here around 6pm. I was not home at the time and my birds 3 ducks and 3 hens had access to the coop the whole time. A HUGE branch fell into my pen and, no joke, was sticking straight up and about 6 inches into the ground.

When I first ran home and looked up there, all the birds were fine (I thought). Rex, my male Pekin is limping badly. He is able to stand on the foot and his foot/leg does not look swollen. He is holding it a little funny, and lays down after running across the pen. If it was his hip, would he be able to walk at all? No cuts bruises etc. I may be a little paranoid, but I don't like him hobbling like that. Is there anything I can give him to help him speed his recovery? He is eating, drinking fine. I have to lift him into the kiddie pool. Will it just heal on its own? Should I put him in the "duck House" where he cannot run around too much? Still wants to mate the ladies

Any advice would be greatly appreciated..

My suggestion to you is that you should isolate him in a nice warm semi dark room, we keep a "box" that is made of of wood for this purpose. Being sick chicks and or injured animals. It is good size and has plenty of ventalition. We never keep them in there over two days. But it just gives them time to rest and heal, and still be feed and given water. Held a bit more as well, which just like a child seems to speed up the healing process.

Personally that is what I would do.

We are reather new on the entire chickens / duck realm but I would image it is more like a good bruising or sprain or I agree he would not be able to walk if his hip was broken.

But either way he should be ok! Just give him extra attention!

Thanks, my girls are already out there cuddling him. I will bring him in tonight. I have a "hospital" tupperware I use for boo boo's. He is really perky and acting the same as always, but just badly limping. I have an open cage that I can put him in for the day and leave it in the pen so he still feels close to his ladies. I was just so worried it may be his hip. The way he is moving is indicating that it isn't. Thanks for the reply and hopefully he will be walking better soon. I'll go give him some baby spinach (his favorite) and some vitamins in his water. Thanks again!!
