Hi All,

I just went in the room where we keep the display for our outdoor wireless thermometer and it said that the humidity in my coop is 79% (it's been snowing) and the temps are supposed to drop to about 20 degrees tonight. My coop doesn't seem to do much more than provide a windbreak and doesn't maintain a higher temp than the outside (this is based on the one cold night of evidence that we've had). Anyway, all that said - I decided to put bag balm on their combs and wattles and during all of the resistance they provided, I accidentally got some on one of my hen's eyelids, possibly in her eye. My question is, do I need to go out there and wipe her eye off or, will she likely just blink it away?

Thanks!

Hens don't need petroleum jelly/balm on comb and wattles. People use it on cock birds with fair effect. With winter your need is good ventilation.

No idea what to do with the goop in eye. I'd wipe as much off as you can without touching the eye.

Well, that's certainly good to know! It was a royal pain to get it on there! Can't say they or I will be sad to not do it again. :woot Thanks for the info, off to wipe off an eyeball! (Carefully)

Curious if you know the humidity level outside the coop?
That will tell you if you have adequate ventilation.
Inside will probably always be higher, but closer is better.

That is such a great point - I have another outdoor sensor on the way so I’ll definitely compare.
