Baking soda ok?

Hi there, I have 3 week old chicks. Right now I have them in a brooder with sand as their litter. I scoop it clean everyday but it is still stinky. Does anyone know if its ok to mix in some baking soda without making the chicks sick..or worse? Thanks in advance!

I tried pine shavings and they smelled awful! So I switched to sand and it has been way better. Just wondering about adding baking soda and if that will hurt the chicks. Does anyone know if baking soda is ok to use in the sand?

How deep is the sand? Is it damp sand or is it dry?

The sand is about 3 inches deep and it is all dry.

If there is a feed store nearby get some sweet pdz - it's used to keep horse stalls clean smelling and is not harmful to chicks.

I agree with DE or sweet PDZ. Don't use baking soda as I'm not sure that would be good for the chicks to ingest (and they WILL ingest bits of their litter). Good luck!
