Baking Soda to control odor in little coop?

It can irritate anyone or anything that breathes.

The true purpose of deep litter is to help hold heat. So we don't start deep litter until late autumn, let it build up all winter and spring long, then completely remove and clean out hen house around Memorial Day (depending on NE Ohio weather, of course). The deep litter all goes to the compost heap at that time and all the internal workings of the hen house are swept, cleaned, disinfected.

I toss lavender buds in with the deep litter straw. A local grower sells a scoop of the buds for a buck a scoop, and a toss of that really helps. Also, my birdies free range, so that helps too. Maybe you have some other sort of local strong scented flower that you could toss into the litter or hang in the coop to help. Citruce peels hung up can be a good natural air freshener. Also try turing the deep litter a little more maybe. Good luck.
