Hello,
Our Buff Orpington has gone through her molt this fall (started beginning of October) and now has a bald spot below her vent. The feathers appear to be growing back in some areas and other feathers have been broken off for awhile and are not growing (see photos). She is the dominant hen and regularly laying. No evidence of mites or lice and her skin appears healthy. She’s had the bald spot for over a month. Not sure if she’s pecking her feathers out or if it’s the other chickens. We have five chickens in a 90+ SF run and partially free range so they have plenty of space.

Any ideas? Do we need to separate her for awhile? Pluck the broken feathers (does this require a vet? Heard this can be a little tricky).

Thanks!

One or more of her flock mates are feather pecking/plucking her. Generally it's the bird in the flock that is in perfect feather.
