Ballsy Raccoon!

I had a raccoon rip off half of my cats face,so yes I will shoot every one I see on my property also Porcupines. Going to the vet is not cheap.

I had a raccoon attack my cat and try and drag her off in his mouth. She's a Maine coon, so she's pretty big and the coon still got her. We scared it off and took her to the vet first thing in the morning and they said she wouldn't have survived the rest of the day. $400 later, she was fine but I also decided I'm not taking any chances with raccoons.
I'm sorry about your cat, raccoons are really nasty creatures.

I must have missed a response to my thread that was later deleted... I infer from this response that someone called me a murderer for killing the raccoon... I will say this about that.... I have chickens, geese, ducks, goats, horses, and cows for livestock. I also have a crapload of rescue dogs/cats. I have 56 acres, over half of it is in the woods, had the raccoon stayed in the woods, he would STILL be alive. However, raccoons do NOT buy the feed, so therefore they DO NOT get to enjoy the eggs/chickens etc... and if I catch them on the cleared portion of the property, I shoot. My chickens free range, and beleive me, the wildlife has taken their fair share of my stock, including killing them just for the fun of it. If someone has an issue with it. TOO BAD. It is NO MORE murder and eating the roosters that I raise. Its part of living a rural lifestyle. I don't call them murders for being wild animals, and those throwing that kind of stuff around need to grow up and get real. I feed my family with the things I grow/raise here... If the raccoon takes a chicken, it's taking food off my table. SORRY but that is NOT OK...

I have caught over 40 coons and possums in one year.Been a while since I put the trap out.Yes,you just keep on trapping. It is not a big deal. There will always be house sparrows too,but that does not stop me from trapping them as well.
I just had a raccoon swallow a 4 week old. Middle of the day. Middle of the yard. I'm very angry. I've got a shotgun - but I don't think I'm allowed to shoot in the city limits. I have a live animal trap. Will a raccoon fall for that? What would be the best bait? How do I catch a raccoon without constantly catching a chicken?

Thanks.

Promise not to relocate. :)

o i hate those evil little coons.they stalked my coop all summer last year until finally the crafty buggers some how got in and ripped all 5 of my hens apart.it was an awful mess, gory and gross. i recently got 6 new baby chicks and this time the coop will be much more secure against predators.

Yes large live trap will work just fine, use a can of cat food or tuna for bait. We live on a farm also, We were having a coon problem awhile back. I caught 8 in one week, solved the coon problem for a while.

If you are worried about constantly catching chickens then keep them locked up or in a different area from the trap. I would shoot them but if you are in town maybe you cannot do that? That is the only way of killing that I consider humane, you will likely get recommendations of drowning but I don't care to do that to an animal. The only thing I may consider is some sort of barrel hooked to a hose which is hooked to the exhaust of a car running in the garage where nobody can see you, put the hose and the trap in a large bag and gas it to death, probably no more humane than drowning but it seems better to me

I use a Hunting crossbow - quick, effective & quiet. If guns are not available to use due to ordinance there are still ways to protect a flock :).

*here there were rules about killing certain animals without licenses, so for a very low fee we got our fishing and hunting licences to cover ourselves on protecting the kids/pets/livestock
