Bankrupt? tell me all you know about doing it?

I agree with everything Purple has said (beautifully).

Most of us have had financial issues at one point or another, it's part of life. Remember that it will pass, your credit will get better again and your financial picture will improve.

Just wanted to let you know, you have done nothing wrong what so ever. I am in same boat. We were Self Employed and making in excess of $600,000 a year. Granted that was gross not net, you know how self employment goes. I don't have to explain that part. But, I can tell everyone that I never dreamed the bottom would fall out of our Business. It was only growing larger and larger every year.

When the Economy dropped, we exhausted all of our reserve funds to try to and keep the business going, but it just couldn't be done. We can not change the Economy, and that is what has put us under.

Living within our means is a big statement!! We were living within our means. But, when you have to take every penny you have saved with no income coming in, because the business is no longer making money, then it goes pretty fast. Esp. with General Liability, Vehicle Insurance, Vehicle payments, Payroll, Fuel, etc. etc. etc.

Until someone is Self Employed, then you truly can not understand everything that goes along with it. When your Self Employed you rely on Contractors to Pay your draws, if those Contractors do not pay, then your out all the Labor and material, etc. When the Economy went under, we were not paid by several Contractors, in excess of $150,000. So, you take that money that we did not collect, on top of the Labor, Fuel and material cost for all those jobs. That's a hard hit!

Cop-out? I don't think so. So, whomever thinks it's a cop-out, please tell me how I can pay the debt for the Company on what we are making now, which is $29,000.00 a year.

Sonew, I know how you feel, and don't let anyone make you feel that you have done wrong. Things happen in life that you can not control!

Just for the record, I am self-employed so I'm very familiar with all that goes along with it....we farm and have a cow herd. In 2007 we had a failure of our wheat crop due to a late freeze....our crop averaged 9 bushels to the acre compared to a normal 45-50 bushels. No insurance to cover that loss. Think that didn't make us tighten our belts? We still had input costs to pay for, our health insurance, farm insurance, property taxes, etc. We were able to cover those costs because we had planned ahead for just such an occurance and hadn't overextended our operation....left very little to live on day to day, but we made it thru. So you see I do know how it is when things don't keep going on the same level of income that they have been. This year we're looking at another poor crop because of the weather...something we have absolutely no control over. We are still recovering from the 07 crop failure, but I know we'll make do with what we've got and pay our bills on time.

Its not that easy for everyone, Katy...
As you said..you're a farmer.. you have access to lots of land that you can plant veggies on to survive through the year ..you have cows that you can butcher for meat if you get hungry...
not everyone has all those options... i wish i did...
If you have enough land to grow on and animals to butcher anyone could it... its not easy, but anyone could do it..
I know my grandparents were dirt poor farmers in Vermont..but they always survived because they had land and veggies and cows and chickens and pigs.... thats how they survived the depression..
I dont have that option here..i only have a small yard... .. i couldnt grow enough to last us a week, never mind all year...... lol

Yep, we'd never starve, but that really has nothing to do with paying thousands of dollars of farm bills every month....even when our crops are bad. The seed sellers, fertilizer dealers, etc still want their money, and we live with in our means so that we can pay our bills to them. We don't over-extend in the good times because we know the next crop failure or plunge in the grain or cattle prices could be just around the corner. We plan ahead and don't over spend...even when we've got it.

Well, Katy I am certainly glad to hear that you have everything under control, good for you. But, some us can not get our situations under control. It depends on what line of Business you are in also.

We were New Construction Plumbers, and I'm sorry if no one is building new houses, then I can't keep things going. Everyone has to buy food, thus the need for businesses such as yours, but not everyone can build a new house anymore. So, there is a big difference between our Businesses, so you can not compare one business to the next.

For heaven's sake, the MAJOR Dealerships are filing Bankruptcy. So, where did they fail? Because...... the Economy? No one can afford to buy new vehicles anymore. So, therefore, they are in trouble. They were asking for Bailouts! Some Major Companies got bailouts and the others did not.

You can eat your crops and survive and lesson your grocery cost per month, I can not eat plumbing fixtures. I have 3 children to make sure I get fed and a roof over their head, and if that means filing Bankruptcy, then that's what I will do. Because, I'll be dam*** if they go hungry.

You call it whatever you like, but don't judge us as people because our Business failed. That is unfair. You just might end up in that Cop Out stage, so I wouldn't count your chickens until they have hatched.

Yes, BUT you dont HAVE to pay thousands of dollars each month if you were REALLY hit bad.(just like someone who lost a job....). you could always go back to the basics.. and just grow enough food for your family on your land.... hell... you'd probably never even have to LEAVE your land.... just grow all what you need there... hay for the critters... wheat for your bread.... etc... etc...You see, you ALWAYS have that option... many others dont... and THATS how bills can pile up...
Thats it! I'm moving in with Katy

If only it were as simplistic as you make it sound......modern farming is not like the "good old days". Sometimes I wish it were.

I think it CAN be what you make it, Katy...
Right now.. that you are comfortable, you can afford to expand and go bigger...(which does cost you money..i understand that...)
But what i am saying is... if things REALLY got bad for you all...you COULD go back to the basics and survive and NOT have to incur any more debt just to eat and keep a roof over your head...
where as.. other people without as much land as you... would HAVE to incur bills to JUST survive.....
You do have an advantage over some people, katy...
Just be thankful for it...
