Bannie or Standard: which ones go broody

Depends upon the breed of chicken. There are both bantam and standard breeds that are great mothers. Some of the heavier hens inadvertantly break eggs when setting. This in my experience is not a problem with bantams. Silkies and cochins are both extremely broody breeds.

x2 on what sourland said! The Cochin and Silkie breed make wonderful Mama's! In fact I bought a few of both this past spring for that reason. All mine are bantams but still have not reached laying age.

Hello Chickenpjoe,

hi from california and welcome aboard :) from what i've read orpingtons and silkies are suposed to be of the broody type. our neighbors orpington hatched some brahmas for us awhile back. so i went and got some myself and im looking for silkies, that being one of the reasons also. our one and only bantom has been sitting on some eggs for three days now but that dosen't mean anything. i've seen chickens sit on eggs for up to 5 days and then just get up and leave, never to return.

:frow & :welcome from Alabama. Glad you joined us. Like RedBarn said, Silkies and Cochins are both phenomenal broodies. We have Silkies and honestly, they've gone broody without any eggs under them at all lol. In fact, I have two that are broody right now.

Glad you joined us! I agree with the above posters. Silkies are walking clucking incubators LOL.

How good, would you say a buff orp would do. All five of mine lay, but they really havn't become broody!
