hi all,

my daughter would like to get another five or six cochin bantams later this summer. we got our first six from mcmurray, but i would like to avoid the mail-order route next time because i don't want another 15 RIR cockerels. i just want the bantams. can anybody point me to a breeder in the area which includes south-eastern PA, northern delaware, southern new jersey, and northern maryland?

conversely, i would gladly do the mail-order thing if i could find a place which would ship just five or six bantams without throwing in the free extra cockerels.

many thanks in advance,

Try going through Ideal Poultry. You only have to order $25 worth and if you don't want the extra roos just opt for the insurance its under $2. I have used twice once with extra roos and once with insurance. Both times they arrived happy and healthy. And once more shipment this May for just a few more. Here are a few of the cochins I got.

thanks yoie. another thing that makes me want to find a breeder where i can pick up some chicks is that i live in a suburban neighborhood and can't have roosters. and it seems that all the mail-order places i've looked at sell straight-run only. my aim is to buy hens so i don't have to find out later that i have paid for a bunch of males that i didn't want.

thanks again for your reply and please let me know if you have any more ideas.

Where in PA are you? I have a few extra bantams in my brooder right now, not exactly what you are looking for but I think they are all girls at the moment. I have a white d'uccle, buff cochin, and an old english or dutch bantam. I also have a black tailed white japanese but it is definately a boy!

i'm in the suburbs of philadelphia, not too far from wilmington DE. however, we need to wait until after july to get any more birds, because we have a vacation here in a couple of weeks, then again the last two weeks of july, and i need to keep the chicken population right where i have it until we get done with all that.

but i appreciate the offer, and i would definitely take you up on it if the time were right.

looking through some other posts i found mypetchicken.com, and i see that they will sell female bantams, albeit at a $6 premium per bird. but i will be happy to pay that for five or six more chicks, as it gives me peace of mind knowing that i won't be buying any males.
