Hello! Just a not-as-quick-as-i-thought question! My son breeds bantam cochins for exhibition both in open and 4h classes. He is not allowed social platforms at his age yet, so I am attempting to help him...

He recently lost his brown red rooster and I am attempting to find a replacement ASAP as it is breeding season :-/ we hatched 3 eggs from the flock before he passed... unfortunately it looks like they are all pullets, lol (probably the ONLY time I would be sad to not get a boy!!!) so we need to find him a new rooster. However, I've contacted quite a few breeders through the cochins international breeder directory and none are selling any adults or eggs or chicks... nothing... SO, I need to find either a different colored rooster that will not affect the color/quality long term OR someone who possibly doesn't advertise through the CI club that has this variety...

You may want to try posting in the buy/sell section of BYC. I think Murray Mcmurray sells red bantam cochins, as well as Cackle, but you can't just buy one, and they are hatchery quality. Hopefully you can find something.

If it comes to it you could use a Birchen rooster. They are the same as Brown Red, but have the Silver gene instead of Gold. The resulting offspring would be Birchen pullets and mixed "Golden" cockerels. If you breed those Golden boys back to a Brown Red about half of the cockerels would be Brown Red. The other half would be more Goldens, half the pullets would be Brown Red and half would be Birchen.

Most of the breeders at Cohins International don't sell chicks. They usually only let go of birds after breeding season when they've had time to evaluate this year's crop.
