I need everyones input. I am looking to get a few Blue or Mottled Cochins but I'd like to know the differences between the Bantams and the Standards. Do they lay the same amount of eggs? How many eggs a year does each breed lay? Are their personalities similar or which one is friendlier? Is one more hardy than the other or handle cold better? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. If anyone has any Blue or Mottled Cochins eggs for sale, please let me know.

I can't answer to the egg laying questions too well, since I just got my bantams, BUT our new little bantam pullet just started laying for us last Monday, and has only missed 2 days, and she was even at a show for 3 days during that time.

If you get bantams, you can get more because they take up less room....the standards are HUGE!

shelleyb1969 has hatching eggs for b/b/s / mottled bantam cochins...

Have fun on your cochin quest!!!

The Bantams are much smaller than the LF, and take up less room.
I'm not sure about the egg-laying factor, but I know someone who gets enough eggs (4-6) a day from his 12 LF Cochin hens.
Each Cochin bantam or LF has it's own personalitiy, but the breed is known for friendlyness, docile, and easyly handled.
Both LF and bantam seem to handle the cold well, but thats my South African opinion. They seem to but it depends on a lot of things.

Enjoy your chooks and those Cochins and welcome to the Forum

i have both, the standards are huge, eat more, take longer to start laying ( they start at 10-11 months) and are hard to find in mottled, the eggs are bigger but not huge,
banties are smaller so you have more, lay just as well and are easier to find in mottled.
both are sweet and broody, it is fun to tote around a 14 lb rooster

hope this helps

I have only owned bantams but of the two, I find that they're more friendly and have more people working with them. Therefore, easier to find in different varieties. I just don't like the look of the standards. I think that bantams are prettier!
