I picked up five adorable "silken" chicks four weeks ago. One's an obvious little cockerel, but the others are harder to tell. What do you think? I'll update this post every few weeks so we can get a progression going :)

1) Cockerel? Bigger than the others, with a comb that popped up early but isn't showing any color yet. Has a more vertical, "rooster-type" stance when it's walking around.

2) Pullet? Comb hasn't changed much in the past few weeks.

3) ?? These walnut combs are so hard! Pretty broad with lots of bumps, but no color and it hasn't changed much in the past couple weeks. The chick itself is one of the smallest with a hen-type body that's always horizontal (though maybe that's a cochin thing).

4) ?? Another tricky walnut comb, but different than #3 above - flatter, but has been reddish since week 1. The chick is small with a more horizontal, hen-type posture.

4) I have no idea!! Ha ha, just kidding :) I mean look at that comb! Total roo, total sweetheart.

Here they are at 7 weeks! The first one is really throwing me for a loop - it started growing a comb at 2 weeks but not much change since week 3. The other black one (#3) is confusing too, especially when compared to the the rooiest of the bunch (#5).

1) Not much comb development since week 3, its wattles are a little red, and it seems to have lost its rooster posture. Pullet?

2) No comb or wattle development at all. This one's the most pullety of the bunch:

3) This one is so confusing. It has a walnut comb that doesn't seem to have changed much over the past month. But it has the second-biggest and second-reddest wattles of the bunch. But a far cry from the rooiest of them (#5)!

4) I think this one's a pullet, even though its comb has been pink since week 1 (maybe sunburned?). Very little wattle and comb development (though with that kind of comb it's harder to tell):

5) And then the no-question cockerel :) Comparing the others to him make them all seem like pullets! Maybe they are?

I’m thinking that you are right!
That would be great! Though if that's true that means I got a higher pullet:roo ratio with these straight run chicks than the four times I tried to buy all pullets from hatcheries and breeders  This is my first time buying straight run, so maybe it's beginners luck :)
