Hello,
Im going to be a new bantam duck owner when my order comes in october.

I ordered a pair of show quality black east indies from holderread waterfowl.
Im so excited and already preparing the coop and decorating it for them.

Glad i found this thread as ive already have learned so much for the 3 pages ive read.much about the BEI.

October??? That is a long way away, 9 months from now.

shouldnt be this time of year, but sounds like he's going into an eclipse molt, deoending on what color he is, any of the mallard pattern one will molt their nice pretty colors and turn into a hen pretty much. This is called eclipse.
But that should have been molted out of back between Oct and Nov in most cases, they all should be in full breeding color now.
Do you keep them inside or under lights?
If so that explains it, their cycle is based off day light hours in a season. If they get artifical light, it can throw them out of whack

holderreads only ships the bei as adults and that is when they first start to ship them.the cooler weather too.i know seems like a very,very long time for me also.

I got my first duck egg today! I have a pair each of Mandarin and Wood ducks. The egg is light tan, anyone have an idea as to whose it is?

Yes they can be very messy at times. They don't make as big of a mess as larger ducks though.
