One of my two miniature silver appleyard ducks has what I am sure is a prolapse.

They have been housed with other full size ducks for the past year or so and I moved them as the Khaki Campbell drake was paddling them both and damaging their head feathers and eyes as he is too big for them.

Since rehousing them I noticed that one was "dribbling" goo from her cloaca. This was still happening today and I managed to capture her to have a closer inspection. There was a ring of what I thought initially was dried poop and a bulbous pink prolapse sticking out of her bottom.

I took her up to the house wrapped in a towel and put her in a washing up bowl (not my regular one I must point out!) of warm water. The dried ring came away of its own accord in the water and I managed to very gently pop the prolapse back. I thought "success!", however the prolapse is back out again, though not as pronounced.

I have now put her in my bath upstairs where she is swimming in warm water and I thought I would leave her in the darkened bathroom like that for half an hour. I inspected her bottom again and can see that this must have been prolapse for a little while though not sure how long, because there was some "scabby" skin on some of the prolapsed tissue.

I am struggling to think what to do next. I cant afford to take her to the vet (not even sure if we have an avian specialist nearby) and I am really concerned for her prospects. Can anyone help please?

I know vets cost money, and I will say that, a stitch on the side of the vent is used to try to keep the prolapse from recurring during healing.

I have also known people to use Preparation H and/or honey on the prolapse to try to reduce swelling and prevent infection.

The warm baths are good. She needs to be by herself, in the dark, for several days, with good food and fresh water and a vitamin-electrolyte-probiotic mix in her water every few days. The darkness is to try to keep her from laying. Keep a close eye on her.

I cannot say for sure, but someone I know suggested Traumeel for injuries like this. You need to do your research, this is just an idea I am passing along.

azhenhouse had some prolapse troubles last year, perhaps you can look at some of her threads.

We bathed Pebble for half an hour in warm water and used some KY jelly and an index finger to gently push her tube back in.

We have kept her in a darkened cage since Saturday evening, following her gynaecological experience, and introduced food again this morning. The cloaca appears to have stayed in and she has been pooping normally. She was much brighter this afternoon, but not quite her usual quacky self yet, so we have taken her back down to her pen pal Sandy this evening so that she has company. They are both away from all the other ducks but have some 10 week old chicks in with them.

Fingers crossed this may be a lucky escape and she will recover to her old self in a few more days.

Meanwhile, we have new arrivals in the main duck house! Check out my new thread "Hatching Ducklings at Portland UK".......

There's never a dull moment when you've got poultry!!!

Good report! I hope she continues to improve.

Our vet told me to give her extra calcium for a while, when Sechs had a prolapse a few weeks ago. Just passing that along. She had a no-shell egg in her oviduct.
