I have a small flock of 9 hens and 1 rooster. We have a good friend selling 4 bantam hens..would love to get them. They are super friendly and easy to handle. My other 10 are not as easy....

We have a 20x20 pen. And hope to free range them later this summer early fall for short periods. What are the chances adding the 4 bantams would go well? I have had bantams in the past but they were all ordered together and raised from babies. So I was not sure on the blending process.

We experienced no issues with our initial flock of three standard and four bantam chickens. They were all raised together (began in separate brooders, then slowly integrated with lots of free-roaming time). Finally, they were all together in one run area with continued free-ranging time. There were no issues at all. Two of the bantams were cockerels. We purchased four more standard pullet chicks, and rehomed our roos due to noise issues/neighbors. We gradually introduced the four new birds to the rest of the flock (three standard/two bantam hens). All went well, at first, and then all seven of the larger birds began pecking and chasing the bantams - even when free-ranging over a large space. We eventually decided to house all birds together in a large coop with a separate area for the two bantam gals. -also sectioned off their own area of the run. -just worked better for us to eliminate the issues.

You may do well with integrating standard and bantam chickens. With our roos and original group of hens, things were fine. -dynamics changed when there were more large hens and no roos. Anyway, good luck to you on your flock!

Thank you! :) I am working on figuring out a way to divide the chicken pen and make a safe area for any babies or bantams. :) making a plan..so I can be prepared if this works out. Thank you! :)
