We were not home much this weekend and the girls weren't able to get much time outside the coop/run. Our banty had been laying in the nesting box pretty much all day from what I could tell. This afternoon when I checked the nesting box she was laying there and my daughter said she had lifted her up and there was no egg, she would puff up and cackle. So I was thinking maybe she is going broody. I have never had a hen go broody so I am not sure exactly what they do. Well a while later we went to check on her and I picked her up, still no egg. So I start looking at her vent hoping she wasn't egg bound. Her vent looked kind of funny like she wanted to lay. She was standing in my hand and her vent starts moving and out pops an egg, It was the coolest thing to see! She laid her egg in my hand. Well she started cackling and the kids are like mom put her back she wants to lay on her egg. I put the egg in the nesting box and let her sit on it. When I went out later to check on everyone and get them ready for bed she is still on the egg. So I take the egg and she doesn't want to leave the nest. I hand fed her since her crop felt empty and when I set her down in the coop she went back to the nesting box...thinking she might be broody?? I guess I will she how she is acting in the morning but that was so cool she laid her egg in my hand!
