Bare Belly on Broody Hen

Don’t worry, it’s normal! They pluck the feathers out to use to keep the eggs warm and also like to have skin contact with their chicks/eggs.

And then THIS happened! She is DONE and now I got to get her back together. poor spike. I did save one egg.

Ditto what Tool said! I looked up “bare belly broody hen” and went straight here. Our poor Barnevelder was sitting on a very hot, Very realistic rubber egg a friend got at a work event as a gag. It’s perfect for a nest box. Goofy hen hadn’t been out of the box in over 24 hours! We had to force her to drink water for ages before she popped out of that trance-like state. This was great, reassuring information. Thanks!
Now, if only we had hatchable eggs for her. We only have room for 4 hens AND NO ROOSTERS where we live. Our coop is a “4-6 hen coop” but no way could more than 4 hens squeeze in there. Our Dorking takes up almost the same amount of space as the Barnevelder and Easter egger combined. The fourth is an Orp, so we’re stuck at 4 hens. Never thought I’d want more than 4 but I do! #chickenmath
