Bare Chicken Back for Long Time

our chickens back has looked like this for a couple months now. Could it be just a rooster? Is it unusual to last for so long?

I have a hen who is the rooster's favorite, and her back has been that way for months. When she molts the feathers will come back, if the rooster will let them. They do sell little aprons for chickens that seem to help.

Broken feathers will not grow back until a molt (which typically happens yearly once a bird is 1 year old). If you have a rooster than is overmating, you may want to look into chicken saddles or fix the ratio of hens to roosters.
