We are raising two Barred Rock chicks. We recently noticed that under one of their wings is bare, dry and reddish in color. Almost like its irritated. This particular chick is the smallest of the two and her poo is a little runny. I am not sure if that has something to do with the irritation under the wing? Please help. Thank you!

If they are outdoors, they could have picked up some lice or mites. More likely it's just a minor skin irritation, perhaps from a small injury. I'd probably put a little antiseptic ointment on it and watch it for a day or two. They do tend to get some bare spots when their first feathers are coming in; sometimes they look a bit "moth eaten."

Thank you for the reply, I will try the ointment. Her fuzzy feathers do look "moth eaten"! When I got home from work yesterday the bare spots had moved around from under her right wing to her right breast area. It does not seem normal. The areas looks like someone just pulled her fuzz off leaving bare skin. I wish I had taken a pic! On the way home from work I stopped by the feed store to p/u some pine shavings. While I was there I explained the chick's situation. The gal at the feed store told me to put some powder Sulfur on the area as it was probably mites and this would help. She went on to say that Sulfur was a "livestock cure-all". Does anyone know about this? And is it safe for chicks? If it is not mites then what could it be? Thanks in advance for any help I might receive on this.
