I've been lurking around here for a while, reading quite a few posts. My wife and I just finally got our first batch of hatchlings today: 5 Barred Rocks.

Since we brought them home, there's been one chick that's been really consistently having problems with pasting. I keep taking her out, washing off her vent, drying her, and putting her back. This last time noticed a raw patch on her underside, it's a strip that goes from her breast down to near the vent, and is about 1/2 cm wide. I can actually see veins and organs moving through it. I'm rather worried for her.

Is this a mutation, or is this something that's gone wrong? Is this something anyone has heard of?

This is my first time with chickens, so I'm rather nervous about potential problems.

I'll see if I can take a decent picture of the problem area, and will follow up with the pic if it works out.

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Alex

I'm sorry your first post is such an urgent one, and that I don't have an answer for you. I just want to say don't be discouraged if you don't get help tonight, there aren't that many night owls on so while you may get lucky don't feel like nobody cares if you end up having to ask again in the morning. Hope everything works out for you.

Nope, I don't think I can get a workable picture without help (my wife is at work). I didn't figure many people would see it tonight, but figured I'd go ahead and post on the off chance someone could help. I'll keep trying tomorrow.

Thanks for the welcome, and the encouragement.

for the pasty butt add some olive oil/vegi oil to her vent area...that will help with poo sticking to her skin/feathers, it works great. As for the other I'm not sure

Hope she does a little better as the day goes on tomorrow.

Welcome to the site!

Well, this morning she was completely pasted up. I got her cleaned off and oiled up. In the middle of the process, my wife helped me take a picture.

So, this is what's up. It doesn't look as bad as yesterday, but still seems like something to be concerned about. The bare strip is most prominent when she's wet, but is still visible when she's dry too.

She wasn't that bothered while I washed her off, but sure screamed about being wet when I wasn't doing anything in particular.

Blackbird, is this the bare strip they apparently all have?

I think it looks fine. skin looks good and pink not white or red. I don't think you have to worry to much. Now that you have her vent oiled should be much better with pasty butt now. Be sure to reapply twice a day..one in the am and one before you go to bed. In a few weeks you wont have to worry about that. They grow out of it. My cochins are the only ones to ever get it, never any of my other breeds. Not sure why but that's how it always turned out. Good luck and hope she does well. Does she seem to be eating/drinking and walking around fine? Does she scratch and peck for food at the ground?
