I have two Barnevelder chicks, both from Ideal, will be 4 weeks old in a couple of days. They are displaying different color patterns as their feathers come in, and I'm sort of curious if that's a natural variation between individuals or if it might be an early tell for sex differences.

This chick has feathered in quicker, and has the multi color feather pattern coming in on its chest feathers:

It also has nearly all of its back feathers coming in now:

This little chick was sickly for nearly a week and I suspect is a bit runty because of it. Its smaller than the above chick and has not grown in its back feathers- I assumed because of being runty, but others have said late feather development can also mean males. It also is getting more solid black feathers in on the chest:

Still mostly fuzz back here:

Both have tiny little combs coming in, flesh colored and not much difference in size. I know its still too young to tell for sure, but was curious if anyone else has seen this difference in feathers with the breed.

Well interesting little update. I got curious and decided to do the feather sexing DNA test. Thought it would be a fun experiment and... color me surprised.

Both came back as female.

Which is really interesting because the one I suspected was male is starting to show other male characteristics, specifically the waddle area is getting pretty pink (albeit still small).

Guess we'll have to wait and see if that .01% margin of error snuck its way into my samples. They are 5 weeks old in these pics.

Do you have any current pics? I’d love to see how they turned out!

I have two chicks that feathered out at different rates, were different colours on hatch, different body shapes and now they are both turning out to be very likely cockerels, when I was convinced I had one of each!

Barnevelders are so difficult to sex, and so slow maturing.
