I’m pretty sure we have come to the conclusion that out of our 3 barnevelders we have 2 roos.they are approximately 8weeks old. They make a ton of noise and look different from the 3rd. Can someone help us? The first 2 pics are what we suspect are the roos. The 3rd pic is all 3 of the barnevelders (the lowest chick is the suspected female). 4th pic the suspected female is far right. The last 2 pics are also the suspected female. Can get better pics when the rain lets up and the sun comes out. Thanks for any help!!

I'm posting this because I'm still trying to learn about red leakage and male/female specific color patterns. Since these birds look so similar I'm hoping it will help clear up my confusion.

Leakage Throughout the Bird.jpeg Red leakage throughout the feathers I think indicates female

Sparse Leakage.jpeg Sparse red leakage I think indicates male.

If this is correct . . .Yay, I'm learning, lol. If it isn't or I have it backwards feel free to explain what I'm missing.

When the combs are that large and red, don’t even question the coloring of the feathers. They are cockerels regardless. Look at three on the right to see how comb should look at 8 weeks (picture I found online).

I agree! From what I know about the breed. If they have the lacing all over, especially the breast they are more than likely female. She has a split tail while the males have an elongated pointed tail. They males are almost twice her size. The great news is I found a girl in my hometown that has a phd in poultry science that is willing to take the roos!

I understand about combs at a young age. The confusion is when the chickens are older and hens start getting dark combs and wattles and others say it's a hen/roo based on gender specific feathering or color pattern that I'm having trouble wrapping my head around.

I was asking about it based on those chicks since they're all (seemingly) the same breed to see if I'm starting to understand how the gender specific feathering or color patterns works.

I guess if they're all males though, it might be a bad example to use.
