No, tail feathers are not an accurate way to gender young chickens.

Most, if not all of these chicks appear to have beards and muffs. They don't look like purebred Barnevelders to me. Perhaps they're Easter eggers or Barnevelder/Easter egger crosses?
These were mom and dad (they were in with three silver spangled hamburgs who I also have one cross from with this Roo) What do you think?

Neither is a Barnevelder. The hen looks really close to a blue laced red Wyandotte, but the comb seems a bit off, so she may be a Wyandotte mix.

The rooster is definitely a mix. I'm guessing he's gold laced Polish mixed with Easter egger, but I can't say for sure.

So the chicks are mixed breeds. 6 weeks is a good time to start evaluating gender. At that stage, you'll be looking at the size and color of the combs. Males will have larger and more colorful combs than females.

Post back if you need help. There are always folks about in here who will be happy to assist.

Definitely not Barnevelders. Barnevelders should have a single comb, those look like...not single. Maybe rose comb, maybe walnut comb, maybe super funky modified pea combs.

The rooster has muffs, so probably an EE or ameraucana mix. He also looks like maybe he has a small crest? Idk what kind of mix he is.

The hen looks like maybe a blue laced red wyandotte.

Thank you for your input! I really appreciate it.

Thank you so much! I actually have some that are that age. Let me take pictures of them and post back in a minute!

These are 6-7 weeks old. The second to last was the rooster mixed with a silver spangled Hamburg hen.
