Barred Owl

Looking for ideas on how to scare away an owl. Yesterday it was sitting in a tree checking out the chickens. The chickens of course freaked out and made one hell of a lot of noise. The smart ones went inside. The not so bright ones stayed out and screamed till I scared the owl away. The run is completely enclosed with hardware cloth so there is no real danger but the chickens don't get that. Hate to have this go on all day while I am at work.

I would think that an owl will only be a threat in the evening, and having your flock safely in their run will protect them. It should move on if there's no chance of a chicken dinner at your coop! You could find out if that species migrates out of your area, or lives there year round. Mary

One way to keep your chickens calm and feeling safe would be to put a tarp or something over the top of their run, that way that won't see the owl if its setting in a high tree or flying above
