Hello, my name is Jovanna and me and my family are new barred rock chicken owners. We were fortunate enough to be graced with 2 chickens but unfortunately nature took one from us very early so we now only have 1. "Pepper" Is about 4 months old and I noticed recently the behavior is changing. She started pecking at me and is starting to become a bit more aggressive. Also, throughout the day she speaks. She will come when I call her she makes little calls during the day. Yesterday, she made a noise that I had never heard. Everyone keeps saying she is a hen but I believe in my heart that "she" is a "rooster" any early help would be grateful. I reached out to manna pro the owners of her food and from the research I am still confused. My biggest discovery that I can't find information on is there are green in her feathers and she talks all day long she is also getting more aggressive by the day. She's not scared of me when I shew her away anymore.

"Salt and Pepper" I miss her or him. Salt wouldnl never let us pet " her" and was always kind of standoffish. My husband believes salt was the rooster and pepper is a hen.

I can't be sure but it looks like a hen to me. I have a little barred rock I call Speeder which gradually became very squabbly over her youth. I have heard barred rocks are either the sweetest little things or an absolute menace. Speeder definitely pecks and squabbles at me non-stop.

Edit: I noticed after rereading your post that you have only the one chicken. It could be that the chicken is lonely and bored without any flock mates.

We are working on getting her company.

We originally believed that salt are white barred rock was a rooster. That is the one mother nature/the raccoon got to last week. We are in the process of building a chicken run as we have a chicken co-op and that is what the predator broke into. Salt was so beautiful I really miss her or him.

My husband said salt was our rooster and he believes that pepper is our hen we will see. Thank you for all of the responses
