So I've read every thread almost to figure out what this barred rock chick is. We are guessing male. It seemed blacker at first and over the weeks the down is more gray.

Last photo is day we got it and others are today.

We've had it two weeks. It was smaller than many of the other chicks we got that were up to three weeks old (not barred rocks). It had no tail feathers. Has black splashes on front of legs. Spread out white dot on head. It came from a feed store pullet bin. Was the sweetest and is now a pig and bully. It already has some wattles appearing that seen reddish, but the string near it one of the photos is much redder. Seems early to develop comb? Should we name it chicken dinner or Ethel? Still way to early to tell? I imagine you all groan everyevery someone asks gender. Thanks!

Thank you both! Next year I'll try to get a barred rock pullet again and I'll be able to choose better. We believe we got 8 pullets out of the 9 chicks, so that's not too bad. We have two OE's, two Novagens, one gold sexlink, a cukoo maran, a buff and a SL wyondette. So much fun!

I researched sexing day old Barred Rock chicks this year because I knew we wanted some. It sounds so easy in theory....until you're looking at 15 squirming chicks lol. I was lucky, she had some almost 3 weekers that were really easy to tell the difference in. 8 out of 9 is pretty dang good! Sounds like have a beautiful flock!!!

Yes, it is difficult when they don't hold still for long. I actually let the feed store staff pick everything out. I was clueless about all the breeds. Learning a lot now. That's great that they were three weekers! Lucky!
