So my neighbor and her son's girlfriend stopped by to see the chickies, and they are both experienced chicken people from childhood. They both agreed that my one barred rock looks like she's a he! They're not even 2 weeks old, but I also noticed just this morning that one has a much more prominent comb than the other 4. I took pics -- any opinions? Or is it way too soon to tell. I didn't see spurs but I don't really know what I'm looking at, either. Thanks!!!

The rest of them have smaller combs like this...

weird...I look at the chicks, and it jumps out at me, but I look at the pics, and I feel like I'm a little nutty for noticing...hmmm....

We have 3 barred rocks and was wondering the same thing. Ours are 6 wks and I'm still not sure?? This link was in a thread a while back, hope it helps AND hope I pasted it correctly, let me know.. I was under the impression also that it was the color of their legs and or feet and the size of the white spot on their head. This article will leave you asking even more questions, but thats good...

Not so much his comb size at that age as that large diffuse head spot he's got. I'd be betting on Roo. That dominique article is spot on and you get a feel for it over time as well. Watch his ankles, if they turn into bulky cankles - he'll be crowing eventually. Often you'll see differences in feet/ankles long before the combs color or develop.

I have twenty-five barred rocks and only three of them are supposed to be roos. Many of the supposed hens show some comb development that has me looking closely at them and wondering. Mine are only going into their second week. They can't ALL be roos. So I guess hens can have some comb, too--even at an early age.

Let us know how it turns out.

the roos have the spot on their head. No mistaking that - boy

Boy, I hope I misunderstand where the spot is or you are wrong. Almost all my "hens" have spots on their heads. Could you explain more clearly?

Its too soon to tell. You will be able to see it more clearly in the next few weeks i'm sure.

From what I've learned on the site, most roos have a larger and more splotchy head spot than pullets. They also have more yellow legs and are lighter in color (more gray). My first BR had a large head spot and yellow legs. My pullet had a very small spot and dark up the front of her legs but she was always a lighter color.

legs are exactly like the roo in the article, he;s more gray than black, and hi spot is like the one on the left in the article, and he's the biggest one. he can even fly out of the brooder, and he's the only one. we'll see!

if he is, checkers mc fly is his name!!!!!!
