Hi All,

New member here from Australia.

First I'd like to say this is an amazing community, I've learnt so much about chickens browsing these forums - more so than any other community or resource online. It's incredible to see such an active, knowledgeable and helpful community on a traditional style forum in 2021 - I love it :D

I'm new to raising chickens, although I've had a pair of Hyline Browns in the past, I got my first traditional backyard breed with 2 barred rocks back in March 2020. They went broody in the spring and I decided to get some fertilized eggs.

So the first broody's batch of fertilized eggs hatched in early November - 7 out of 8 hatched with the last one turning out not to be fertilized so I was very happy with the results.

Now they are 14 weeks, I'm relatively confident 3 are pullets and 3 are cockerels but one of them has a lot of lacing and I'm not sure. Leaning towards pullet because the comb/wattles are smaller like the other pullets. Hoping for some confirmation. Also if anyone can guess what it's crossed with that'd be great. I thought maybe Wyandotte but that's the only laced breed I know of with my limited knowledge. I also don't know the parents because the eggs came from a friend of a friend who lives out of town.

So any thoughts on the sex, including if I may have wrongly assumed the ones I feel confident about. Thanks in advance :D

First two pics are of "Dusty" - the laced one I'm unsure of.

Next pic is an example of one of the 3 cockerels - they all look almost exactly the same in terms of feathers, size and comb/wattles.

Last pic is an example of one of the 3 pullets - these three I can tell the difference more easily - mainly with size however their comb/wattles are all basically the same. One of these 3 (the one pictured) also has some lacing although less strong than "Dusty" in the first two pics.

What a confusing chicken. The comb and wattles are small yet fairly colored, but I see no long and pointy saddle or hackle feathers. I don't think it has wyandotte, unless less it was a straight comb Wyandotte.
I'm leaning towards Pullet but barred birds are hard to see feathers on.

Thanks very much for the replies everyone.
Appreciate all your thoughts.

No idea what it's crossed with (not Wyandotte)
Thanks Overo Mare, I had a lot of trouble finding anything looking like Dusty online so it's good to hear from someone experienced that it's not easy to determine.

Really interesting that micstrachan and bill3607 are calling pic 3 as a pullet as well. Perhaps I should take pics of all 7 birds to post, since two others look so similar to pic 3, it'd be incredibly good luck if all 7 were pullets.

What a confusing chicken.

haha yeah I've definitely been confused by Dusty, both with sex and possible breed, but Dusty's got a really nice nature and pretty feathers so hoping to keep him/her and from the replies, the consensus is pullet which is great

Definite Pullet! I’m not too sure what she’s mixed with but she’s pretty! It’s not a Wyandotte though. Is it just me or does she have green legs?
Btw I’m an Aussie too! So nice to see some more Aussies in the BYC community!

How old is the bird in pic 3?
