I have about 40-50 chickens in the yard. I have two mature RIR roosters and about 12 RIR hens. The roosters are also crossing with BR, Leghorn and Americana hens which makes up the rest of the flock. So far in our incubator we have had what seems to be 2 RIR chicks come out yellow in color. We have also had two hatch that were straight black. These would have came off the barred rock hens cause the eggs were brown. With them being crossed with RIR what would they be considered? Yardbirds? Someone told me sexlinks or just mutts.

the RIR x BR would be sexlinks, if the straight black chicks lack any cream/yellow headspot then they are hens

Ok so what do sexlinks look like and is it considered another breed? Sexlink rooster X sexlink hen = what. Also they did not have any spots on their heads so I'm guessing them to be hens...thanks

In your case, it would called a Black Sex Link.

The females are all black with copper color breast and neck feathers. The males will look similar to a Barred Rock as they mature, except that they'll have some leakage of red in their wings usually.

No, the term sex link simply refers to the fact that you can link or easily see their sex at hatch. Black Sex links, as chicks, are easily sexed. Males will have a head spot while the females will lack them.

No, it isn't a breed. It's a mix/mutt that is easily sexed.

sex link hens grow to be black birds with gold an the neck, chest and back, the amount of gold varies. a sex link bred with a sex link = a barnyard mix, they will not be sex links. if they don't have a white spot on their heads, then yes, they are females. they are amazing layers, and start fairly early.

here is a male and female black sexlink

sex links are not concidered a breed. they are just they outcome of a sex linked cross. so they are crossbreeds. sex linked rooster mated to a sex linked hen will not produce more sexlinks

So if one of my RIR roosters breeds one of these sexlink hens next year, and we hatch the egg, the chick would just be considered a mutt like crossbreeding dogs correct?
